The Mountain Are Calling
Darla Worden recaps the making of the 2023 March/April mountain issue
Many of us dream of one day owning a mountain house, whether it’s a forever home, a weekend getaway or a retreat. In this issue, we share mountain homes in Aspen, Evergreen, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Old Snowmass and Basalt—with many different styles of architecture and décor, from the reimagined miner’s cabin in Aspen to the comfortable family retreat at the Roaring Fork Club in Basalt.
Some are constructed from hand-hewn timbers and native stone like the Basalt residence; the Aspen cabin has streamlined interiors and walls covered in Venetian plaster; and another home, outside Aspen, is traditional on the outside and surprising on the inside with whitewashed logs— all styles equally at home in Colorado’s mountains.
The styles may vary, but the way homeowners enjoy their mountain spaces is the same across the board: shared with friends and family is best, and the homes were created with a checklist for entertaining in mind. The Teets family in Evergreen created indoor-outdoor living opportunities with a giant accordion door that opens up the back of the house. The homeowners of the retreat with the whitewashed log interior added a hot tub, fire pit and pizza oven to their list. And many prioritize a charming bunk room with queen beds and luxe linens, all with visitors in mind.
In this issue, we also share some shopping tips from editor-at-large Rebecca Gart, who finds a variety of bespoke cowboy hats (High Points, page 26), and Cynthia Pillsbury, our Stylemaker, who shares some of her Vail Valley favorites. (page 48).
