A Backyard Becomes an Outdoor Living and Entertainment Space
Meticulous planning results in a year-round oasis reminiscent of a stay at a luxe hotel.
The owners of this Berthoud, Colorado home envisioned a backyard retreat inspired by a “favorite hotel” feel. “A year-round design offering amenities and privacy was what our clients proposed,” explain Dave and Cara Doyle, owners of Summit Outdoor Living. “We were excited to assist them with a residential retreat tailored specifically to their lifestyle.”
A stone fireplace and 7’ by 13’ plunge pool are the anchors of the new layout. “Since the site is adjacent to a gate accessing a public walking trail, the fireplace height lends a feeling of privacy,” says Cara Doyle. “It protects the interior arrangement of the pool and seating area from the direct view of passersby.”
The pool is manufactured by Soake Pools, a privately owned, New England-based company. “Precast in concrete, the form is crafted from a monolithic pour and installed as one seam-free piece—in this case by crane,” explains Karen Larson, co-founder. “Fully hand-tiled, the pool adds a focal point with a body of water that establishes contrast with the arid beauty of the surrounding terrain.” Used to cool off in the summer, the pool can also be heated in the winter for true year-round use and enjoyment.
Both fireplace and planter walls are constructed with stone matching that on the home’s façade. “We worked with the quarry to ensure the material would be perfectly compatible,” Cara Doyle notes. Raised planter walls extend from the base of the fireplace, enclosing the outdoor seating and fashioning an outdoor extension of the home’s primary living space.
The patio and planter wall surfaces are clad with a neutral Italian Mirage tile that blends gracefully with the stone. Natural Evergreen trees were kept at the perimeter, adding height and privacy. A selection of thriving vegetation with a verdant mix of greenery and pale-hued blooms contributes a layer of contrasting texture.
The patio area is made complete with plush outdoor seating. Tables for drinks and appetizers provide visitors the opportunity to settle in and relax. A wireless Sonos sound system offers ambiance, and the lighting system is dark sky and wildlife approved.
“This project was a true collaboration,” emphasizes Dave Doyle. “We achieved the goal of building this exceptional, year-round outdoor space through great communication with our clients.”
