“Have you thought about wallpaper? It’s a simple question that can unlock the door to a new level of creativity in interior design. I always ask our clients if they’re open to patterns and colors to enhance the whimsy in their home’s space,” says Ashley Christensen, principal at Lindy Design Build.

“There has been a resurgence in interest in wallpaper,” Christensen explains. “For sure, today’s wallpapers are much different than your grandmother’s tiny floral wallpaper patterns. Today, trends include different scales in patterns and sizes, bold palettes, and print-to-order options that are truly bespoke. Wallpaper can lighten the mood in a home while adding color and dimension.”

Mural wallpaper has become popular for areas that invite a floor-to-ceiling focus. “This wallpaper technique can make it feel that one is walking into a piece of art,” says Christensen. “Wallpapering private spaces like laundry rooms, bedrooms, mud rooms, powder rooms, and even the backs of bookcases can add unexpected playfulness. Wallpaper on ceilings creates texture and movement on an often-forgotten surface.”

“A huge variety of available wallpaper choices can match any client’s preference,” notes Christensen. Choices range from peel-and-stick papers, perfect for rental homes or DIY installations, to humidity-resistant papers for bathrooms and kitchen spaces, and custom wallpapers that create a unique, one-of-a-kind detail.

“Gun-shy homeowners often start with a smaller room and work their way toward additional projects as they acclimate to the look,” Christensen says. “Usually, our clients choose to paper several rooms with two or three wallpaper choices.”

Whether installed professionally or as a smaller DIY project, there are some guidelines that help make wallpaper a successful choice. “Peel-and-stick papers are usually quite easy to remove, making them an ideal option for smaller projects like a powder room or backsplash. Choosing this option makes it easy to redecorate at any time or to strip at the end of a lease,” shares Christensen. “To paper a larger space or ceiling, we recommend professional installation. A pro can maximize the advantages of a home’s sightlines to accomplish the most eye-pleasing result.”

Wallpaper upkeep has improved over the years due to the use of newer materials. “There are just so many fun opportunities to use wallpaper now. You don’t have to add lots of cost or work to give your home extra warmth and personality.”
