SKYSPACE, a new experiential art installation, is tucked into a hillside in the Red Butte Recreational Area in Green Mountain Falls. Located in the foothills near Pikes Peak and designed by James Turrell, SKYSPACE is a unique art experience that begins and ends with a hike to and from the site overlooking the center of the town of Green Mountain Falls and Gazebo Lake. The installation opened on June 18, 2022 and took five years to plan and build.

SKYSPACE was designed to harmonize with the surrounding natural habitat, and the building’s architecture is a stand-alone work of art. “The one-room structure creates an intersection between art and nature,” says executive director Scott Levy. “The location in Green Mountain Falls was selected, in part, because of the beautiful rich blues of our Colorado skies.”

“This installation is one of only six in the world with a retractable roof or oculus,” notes Levy, “allowing it to remain open almost all year-round.” The location is in close proximity to Colorado Springs—but the area topography makes it feel more remote.

Visitors can expect a moderate hike of about a quarter mile to reach SKYSPACE. Once there, a maximum of 25 guests per viewing are invited to enter and be seated. The oculus, open at sunrise and sunset, gives viewers a truly individual, transformative experience that is both reflective and meditative as they observe the shift of sky and clouds. At midday and during inclement weather, the oculus remains closed and a kinetic light show provides a shorter, unique contemplative experience.

SKYSPACE was built to enhance the thriving Summer Arts Festival that has taken place since 2009 and encourage visitors to Green Mountain Falls year-round. The festival offers a wide variety of arts performances, exhibitions, classes, camps and parties. Attendees may join some or all of the contemporary art events that take place each summer. While the festival is a draw to Green Mountain Falls in the summertime, SKYSPACE brings people to the area all year. Visitors will enjoy the recreation area which is home to trails, wildlife and stunning views. Restaurants and other amenities can be found in the quaint, historical town.

SKYSPACE tickets may be purchased on the Green Box Arts website. Guests are encouraged to dress appropriately for the season and weather and wear comfortable shoes to hike the loop to SKYSPACE and back. Bringing water to stay hydrated at altitude is also recommended. “These advance preparations will help visitors make the most of the SKYSPACE experience,” Levy emphasizes.
