One thing that’s fun about 2021 is this: we’ll continue to enjoy more play time at home with our loved ones. While the home improvement sector has seen a boom during the pandemic, one area is taking the spotlight – The Family Room.
Some homes already have a designated area for entertainment and leisure activities, other homes may be converting spaces or creating a multi-purpose area. In any scenario, implementing creative and practical ideas can enhance the experience of family time.
Whether you are a DIY person or prefer to hire a professional with design expertise, the key to success is coming up with a master plan. That may sound daunting, but it’s easy as 1.2.3. (1. Layout, 2. Storage and 3. Functionality) and can be applied to any style or aesthetic.
1. Layout
A room will be most comfortable when elements are in proportion, scale and allow flow of movement. Take into consideration how many people will need to be accommodated and provide ample seating. Arrange seating close enough for conversation but with enough space for getting in/out and around the furnishings.
The TV will be the focal point for Movie Night or video gaming so be sure everyone has an unobstructed view. Provide table space for board games, puzzles, cards, etc. Lighting is the final element to implement based on the placement of those main pieces.
2. Storage
Solutions for housing all the boxes, disks, electronic components and wires can be practical and beautiful. Having all these items organized and accessible make fun time easier for everyone – a place for everything and everything in its place. Drawers and cabinets keep the room neat and tidy as well – its a win-win-win!
3. Functionality
Be creative! Window seats are a great way to incorporate extra seating and storage. Also take into consideration outlets, wire management and lighting placement so everyone can fully enjoy their favorite activities effortlessly and safely.
