An Internationally Acclaimed Artist Brings Art and Nature Together at the Botanic Gardens
Jaume Plensa's exhibition celebrates the universal human experiences connecting us across cultures and geographies.
Some exhibitions ask you to merely look. Jaume Plensa’s first retrospective is on view at Denver Botanic Gardens and it extends an invitation to slow down, reflect and truly experience your surroundings.
In Jaume Plensa: A New Humanism, the internationally acclaimed Spanish artist’s monumental sculptures are thoughtfully integrated throughout the Gardens’ 24-acre campus, creating a dialogue between contemporary art and the ever-changing beauty of the landscape. Best known for his serene portraits and expressive figurative works, Plensa explores themes of identity, silence and human connection through sculptures that feel both intimate and monumental.
Occupying both outdoor and indoor spaces, the works reveal themselves along winding garden paths, beside tranquil water features and in the Freyer – Newman Center galleries. Throughout summer, the experience continuously transforms with blooming flowers, shifting light and changing foliage, ensuring that no two visits are exactly alike.
The exhibition also highlights the Gardens as a destination where horticulture and cultural programming intersect. Visitors can admire these significant works of art while experiencing one of the country’s premier botanical collections, making for an outing that appeals equally to art enthusiasts, gardeners and anyone seeking a peaceful escape in the city.
Whether viewed in the intimate interiors of the Center or encountered unexpectedly around a bend in the path, Plensa’s sculptures encourage moments of quiet contemplation. The exhibition offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to pause, look closely and appreciate the profound relationship between art, nature and the human spirit.
Jaume Plensa: A New Humanism is on view through September 7 at Denver Botanic Gardens. Advance tickets are available at botanicgardens.org.
