An Artful Experience at the Kimpton Hotel Born
The hotel's eclectic art and the new gourmet dinner package at Citizen Rail make for a fabulous night at downtown Denver's swanky spot
In the heart of Denver's LoDo neighborhood stands an artful urban refuge complete with rooms decked out in alpine modern décor creating a luxurious mountain-y oasis, and a restaurant with wood-fired grills, stellar beef and a sophisticated-yet-welcoming dining experience.
The Kimpton Hotel Born, located at 1600 Wewatta St., has 200 guest rooms and 14,000 square feet of meeting space including two private terraces—one facing the mountains to the West, the other overlooking the now iconic Union Station Transit Hub canopy. With high country and industrial influences in the design and aesthetic, Hotel Born is a modern haven in the bustling center of Denver.
The exterior of the building reflects the brick masonry of LoDo's original historic warehouses while the floor-to-ceiling vertical windows give the hotel a striking presence distinct from any near buildings. The lobby is contemporary but warm and inviting, with knotty pine paneling and walnut herringbone floors combined with board-formed concrete. Hand-woven rugs, textured materials and warm lighting make it feel like home.
If the sleek alpine design doesn't stun you, perhaps the unique art collection will do the trick. With more than 700 original and limited edition works by Denver-area artists, the hotel could rival a small art museum. In fact, Adam Lerner, director of the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art, asked 32 of the most talented artists in the city, representing a diversity of styles, to produce pieces specifically for the hotel, which are displayed throughout the common areas and in the hotel rooms.
Connected through the hotel lobby is Citizen Rail, a Kimpton restaurant with wood-fired fare, a warm ambiance and the friendliest staff to boot. Chef Christian Graves' menu is inspired by the meats, produce and provisions sourced from local purveyors. Craft cocktails and a curated selection of beers and wines complement the sophisticated dining experience. Citizen Rail celebrates the history and culture of our state with artful cooking techniques and a menu inspired by the products Colorado's abundant local farms and fields.
New and continuing through March 2019 is "Taste of Born: Dry-Aged Beef," a one-of-a-kind gourmet culinary package. An intimate Chef's Counter dining experience every Friday through March will provide the history of the artisan craft of dry aging beef and will feature a side-by-side tasting comparing a fresh cut steak to a 28-day dry-aged steak in a prix fixe menu for two that also includes an appetizer, dessert and beverage pairing. Classes are limited to eight people total and require a three day-advance booking. Pricing for the program starts at $350 for two people. The package includes a Friday evening stay at the hotel in accommodations of your choice at Hotel Born.
Hotel Born and Citizen Rail guest Austin Colaizzi said of the dinner package, "It was an exciting experience with a lot of surprises. As someone who loves to eat meat, the dry-aged process was so informational and changed the way I think about good meat. My taste buds certainly appreciated it, too."
