A Sustainable Timber-Frame Home in Steamboat

This Steamboat Springs home, in the postcard-worthy Strawberry Park neighborhood, blends elements of rustic, chic, and eco-conscious design.

The 4,400-square-foot timber-frame, mountain-modern abode sits high up in the canyon, completely off the grid—relying on non-traditional elements for power. In addition to a full solar grid, the home boasts energy-efficient appliances, as well as an on-site propane tank for backup energy.

But this mountain-town retreat isn’t quite secluded from the world; just a few miles from downtown Steamboat, it offers the luxury of opting for a night out, as well as cozying up for a winter escape.

Vertical Arts Architecture crafted an unpretentious yet striking design, clad with simple vertical wood siding, steel panels, and large timber-frame porches—and the interiors follow suit. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces are all under one roof, dubbed “the main great room,” and are adorned with exposed timber on the ceiling, as well as a gorgeous mix of reclaimed wood and steel. The master bedroom lives on the main level, with access to an outdoor patio—perfect for taking in the surrounding views and fresh mountain air. The basement and upper level are connected through a central stairway spline, accented by a wall littered with family photos.
