Tucked at the base of the San Juan Mountains, Creede is one of Colorado’s small, historic silver mining towns. At the headwaters of the Rio Grande River, its downtown features preserved 1890s storefronts and restaurants.

Home to year-round residents and vacationing visitors, Creede is known for its seasonal beauty. The terrain offers a perfect place to enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, and jeep touring. Activities in Creede include the Underground Mining Museum, the Bachelor Loop historic drive, and the Creede Repertory Theatre, famous for professional theater performances throughout the summer months.

For over 20 years, Caldera Design + Build has been crafting vacation homes and permanent residences in Creede. Recently, a Dallas-based couple approached them to help realize their vision for a family vacation cabin. “They wanted something that was truly their own,” says Avery Augur, design director and architect. “They were definitely involved in the steps it took to create a comfortable place that reflected their personalities.”

The result is a 1,532 square foot, two-bedroom, two-bath cabin. “The dwelling’s smaller footprint and flat roof keep it from obstructing the views in the area,” says Augur. “Half of the roof is covered in native grasses providing natural insulation, keeping the interior sustainably cool in the summer and warm in the winter.”

The interior design defies definition. White oak floors, pine ceilings, and pine window trim are enhanced with pops of blue, vintage-style tile, and kitchen appliances with a mid-century modern vibe giving the decor relatable warmth and texture. “A common palette throughout reinforces continuity while defining each living space,” Augur explains.

The dining area features a locally, custom-crafted table and enough seating to comfortably gather. The bedrooms are well-appointed but simple, and the bathrooms are streamlined for ease of use and comfort. The commode room in the primary bath contains a mural painted by one of the set designers for the Creede Repertory Theatre, an example of the variety of talent located in the town.

An outdoor deck welcomes the owners and their guests as they indulge in a delicious meal, or stargazing and quiet contemplation. Of course, there are the views that simply take one’s breath away. The peaceful, picturesque setting of the town and surrounding natural beauty can be enjoyed indoors and out.

The cabin is unique and whimsical,” says Augur. It’s a result of a fruitful collaboration that brought everything together beautifully, creating a place they cherish.”
