6 Home Design Trends for 2016
By this time of year chances are your New Year’s resolutions are wearing thin, or maybe you didn’t even set resolutions in the first place. Regardless of where you’re at on the resolution spectrum, it’s never too late to make goals for your home or tackle new interior design projects. Breathe some life into your home this winter by adopting one or more of these 2016 design trends.
1. FORMAL DINING ROOMS
Though they may have been undervalued and underutilized in recent years, formal dining rooms are making a comeback for 2016, and they are more glamorous and unique than ever. Interior designers like Avery Aragona of East Egg Style say it’s all about creating a space that shows off your personality while welcoming guests. "When it comes to formal dining rooms, I love to mix different furniture styles,” Aragona says. “Oversized armchairs, benches and additional coordinated seating gives a fun playful look that’s welcoming, not stuffy.”
2. TECH-FREE LIVING ROOMS
Let’s face it—today we spend more face-to-face time with our screens than we do with loved ones. And while technology continues to pervade our culture, there’s an emphasis on unplugging and creating spaces that are technology-free. In 2016, one of these technology-free spaces will be the living room.
3. GEOMETRIC TILES
Geometric tiles are coming back into style, and this time it’s all about mixing and matching on floors and walls. “If you are looking to make a big impact in a small space, you can't go wrong with a fun geometric pattern," Aragona says.
4. BOLD AND AFFORDABLE CURB APPEAL
Curb appeal plays a big role in the overall ambiance of a home, but it can be easy to go over budget when planning exterior projects. This year, ramp up the aesthetic of your home in an affordable yet bold way. In 2016, less is more when it comes to spending money on curb appeal.
5. TAKING BACK THE BATHROOM
Bathrooms tend to be one of the most overlooked spaces in the home—but not this year. In Elle Décor’s 2016 trends report, three of the top 10 trends involved bathroom features, including statement mirrors and bidets. The biggest trend happening in the bathroom this year? Making the bathroom feel cozy with plush chairs, fresh flowers and other homey items.
6. BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN
2016 will be the year the lines become blurred between indoor and outdoor furniture and décor. Whether it’s bringing patio furniture inside or increasing the amount of greenery in the home, designers are experimenting with how to bring nature inside. “Bringing in plants, fresh flowers and other outdoor elements can really brighten up a room and add a much-needed cheerful touch to any home," Aragona says.
