Designing small spaces can be a daunting task—ensuring the room isn’t cluttered or overwhelming is no easy feat.

Luckily for us, we connected with a home design expert who shared her insider knowledge about decorating those petite places at home.

Hallie Collins

After stepping away from her multi-faceted clothing boutique, named one of the “Best Shops in the South” by Southern Living, Hattie Collins pivoted to pursue her passion for interior design. She launched her new company, Hattie Sparks Interiors, creating relaxed, yet refined interiors for a nationwide clientele.

“People typically avoid decorating or spending time in small spaces for fear of them being cramped or disorderly,” says Hattie. “Whether someone is decorating a tiny studio apartment in the middle of a city, or the laundry room in their home, there’s always a way to breathe new life into dull spaces.”

We sat down with Hattie to glean some design advice for making the most of the space you have.

Four Tips for Designing Small Spaces

1. Don’t be afraid to stick to the basics when it comes to a full bath—a single vanity, toilet, and shower/tub combo can look really chic if the finishes are thoughtful!

2. Go BOLD with a wallpaper that has a layered, dimensional pattern. It will provide depth and help a tiny space feel bigger.

3. Use furniture pieces that don’t take up a lot of visual space—like glass or lucite.

4. Invest in custom if you can—a built in bench or bookcase can be tailored to your space’s limitations and provide a great opportunity for hidden storage!
