This Dining Table Helps Young Adults With Cancer

Usually updating your home furnishings does not go hand-in-hand with supporting a worthy cause—but this summer Coloradans will have an opportunity to support a Denver-based non-profit, First Descents, through the purchase of a beautifully handcrafted dining table made from reclaimed and locally sourced materials. The beneficiary, First Descents, provides life-changing outdoor adventures for young adults impacted by cancer.

Lauren and Keith Whittier, founders of TenTables.org, initially launched a large giving campaign back in December, 2014, selling a limited edition set of handcrafted farm-style tables made from reclaimed snow fencing from the Western plains. Over the course of the inaugural TenTables campaign they donated $5,000 worth of proceeds from their sales to local and national charities.

This summer, a unique set of tables made from 130-year old Cypress planks from an old horse barn, set atop a handmade steel railroad truss base, is the featured item. “The beauty of this style”, says Keith, is that “it’s equally as comfortable in an urban loft as it is in classic Colorado bungalow, ranch, or rustic mountain home. The beautiful natural weathering of the planks pulls colors you didn’t even know you had in your home… honey tones and dark grains…. and all of that is anchored by a timeless pewter-grey steel base that’s both sleek and sturdy. We like to talk about it as a modern heirloom piece.”

This set of ten tables is only available while supplies last. Ten percent of proceeds from each purchase of an eight-foot dining table, will go directly towards funding outdoor adventures for young adults affected by cancer. The mission of First Descents is to “empower them through conquering legitimate outdoor challenges to push their limits and face their fears." For years the Whittiers have supported First Descents. Lauren says “our first experience with the community that First Descents built was, well, overwhelming. We had never seen such a passionate group of people come together for such a targeted cause.” First Descents has helped over 3,000 individuals to date, and by doing so, “they are able to regain the confidence and self-efficacy lost to cancer."
