This Denver Kitchen is Transitional in More Ways Than One
A sectioned-off, 1990s kitchen transforms into a bright, airy, and open space—with a continuous layout to boot.
This Colorado home, nestled in the Crestmoor Park neighborhood of Denver, was built in 1990 and had since undergone a handful of renovations. This time around, it was the kitchen’s turn to be brought into the light of present day.
On top of updating the overall aesthetic to a timeless, transitional style, the kitchen designers envisioned opening up the original layout, which was sectioned off from the dining area and family room, and creating a more seamless transition from space to space. Unfortunately, achieving this goal wasn’t going to be an easy feat; previous renovations posed some serious structural obstacles to achieving this vision. Thankfully, with meticulous planning and the guidance of a highly skilled structural engineer, the end result was a giant success.
Take a tour below.
The homeowner’s dream of having a large island and plenty of storage and seating has now come to life. The team navigated the new layout around two large, awkward corner windows—which now feel intuitive to the design and add abundant natural light to the open space. Two-toned cabinetry adds a sense of dimension to the kitchen and ties everything together.
The perimeter of the kitchen was kept clean to display a stunning countertop and backsplash.
The homeowner wanted to incorporate a touch of Moroccan influence into the design without distracting from its clean, transitional style. She chose a tile that was carefully installed into the sides of the island—bookending the kitchen with a visual interest and texture that echoes her travels abroad.
This new kitchen design is transitional not only in its classic and enduring style, but also in its seamless and continuous flow into the surrounding areas—a true upgrade to be enjoyed for years to come.
