A Home Update Infused with Color and Light
Traditional and whimsical design maintain the charm of this historical abode.
Built in 1953, this three-bedroom, four-bath dwelling in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood has been home to Ida Daniel and her family since 1977. “We are the home’s third owners and have developed deep ties to our neighborhood over the years,” says Daniel. “However, our interior was dated and in need of a refresh.” That’s where G Marie & Co Interior Design stepped in.
“We blended an updated aesthetic with the historic neighborhood setting,” says Gwen Smith-Ehrlich, principal at G Marie & Co Interior Design. “We wanted renovations to embrace the abundant natural light, countering the previously dark interior. The new look is welcoming and conducive to entertaining family and friends.”
Dramatic hallway wallpaper by Moda Antica provides a first impression of elegance and whimsy. The kitchen was reimagined by installing new cabinetry by Irie Cabinets and a sleek Miele suite of appliances. A double oven and stovetop grill, a Miele coffee station and a built-in desk enhance efficiency in this hard-working multi-purpose space. Updated light fixtures and a neutral color palette provide sophistication and a big, open feel.
The home’s original floors were refinished throughout the first level, and the dining room chairs were renewed with new upholstery and re-webbing. A new chandelier from Urban Lighting and a custom rug, designed by Smith-Ehrlich and crafted by a local artisan, give the room cohesive sophistication.
The family room features a continuation of the vibrant wallcovering. New tables from the Denver Design Center, a new sofa and Roman shades give a luxury boutique hotel vibe. “The homeowner has an exquisite collection of African American dolls in this space, and we wanted this to be a highlight,” says Smith-Ehrlich.
The main living area combines neutral hues and playful animal print fabric. A view of the parkway adds to the biophilic essence of the home’s location, creating an environment that brings the outdoors in.
The guest bathroom was gutted and refinished in Carrara marble. Cantilevered cabinets are lit from underneath, presenting a spa-like aesthetic. “Small touches combine with the larger changes giving the interior life and personality that honors the architecture,” Smith-Ehrlich says.
Imparting a new perspective creates a great first impression, and guests enter with a smile,” says Daniel, “We absolutely love our neighborhood, and our interior update perfected our decision to stay in the area.”
