Materials Guide: Into the Woods

Matching a homeowner’s lifestyle with the right flooring material is critical for Joe Rocco, co-founder of Artistic Floors by Design. Trending techniques such as hand-scraping and wire-brushing minimize traffic patterns and increase durability, making it easy to create the perfect floor for your home. “If there was a contest for best texture of wood flooring I would pick wire-brushing as my favorite,” says Rocco, who has been installing and refinishing floors for 24 years. “It’s especially great if you’ve got kids and pets, because it helps to extend the longevity of the floor.” Rocco sees a rise in patterned and three-dimensional flooring and the use of borders to set a room apart. In terms of color, Lumber Liquidators’ Jay Quickel says gray plank flooring is the choice of the moment. “It creates a sense of subtle sophistication that complements your décor without distracting from it.”
