In Her Element: Stephanie Lange

Multimedia artist, Boulder

“When I have a brush in my hand, it makes me feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” says Stephanie Lange, shown here on the job at a Denver residence.

Born in Nashville, Lange can’t remember a time when there wasn’t some kind of creativity happening at home. “My dad was a painter and was always working on something—a backdrop for my dance performances, an oil portrait, a watercolor of someone’s house,” she says. “My mom wouldn’t call herself an artist, but she has a keen eye for interior design, amazing abilities with a sewing machine and she makes miracles happen when she’s in a garden.”

Maybe that explains why Lange is talented in so many mediums—fabric, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, collage. She loves when she’s able to customize a piece of art for her clients. The mural above, with the lyrics to Elvis Costello’s “Alison” highlighted the bedroom wall of a client’s daughter with the same name.

“My favorite work involves the personal—a special occasion, birthday or anniversary,” she says. “I often use the number of years as a jumping-off point for a drawing, collage or even a backdrop.”
