The quiet elegance of the packaging catches the eye, but it’s the organic, cruelty-free, vegan product line that is an addictive pleasure. Formulary 55 is a southern Colorado-based small business that has made a significant impact in the wellness and personal care industry. With over 25 scent blends to choose from, Formulary 55 is made for clients of all skin types and hosts a range of items for self-care.

Cordelia Smith began making hand-crafted soaps over 20 years ago. She knew she wanted to expand her business but living in Seattle at that time made it a cost prohibitive goal. “I began doing research to learn where I might relocate that would make great business sense while also accommodating my lifestyle,” she says. She discovered Pueblo, Colorado and was able to purchase a building in the heart of downtown that she could work in and live. Tiring of the rain in Seattle, she says the weather in Pueblo was a huge selling point and the “hometown feel” of the city was a perfect fit for her. “When I made the move, everyone was so friendly,” she exclaims. “I felt instantly welcomed.”

Once settled, Smith began curating and manufacturing her hand-crafted product line. “I wanted packaging that was upscale, approachable and appealing to a diverse clientele,” says Smith. She notes that her men’s product line is extremely popular and outreach to her male clientele focuses on products formulated especially for them. A gallery collection is currently in the works featuring mix and match products and packaging that look beautiful and perform spectacularly.

Originally, Smith ran a storefront in Pueblo, but discovered during the pandemic that online sales were a better way for her business to thrive. “I have such admiration for brick-and-mortar shop owners,” she emphasizes. “I recognize that physical retail can be demanding and am so thankful for the retailers across the country who carry Formulary 55.” She also points out that hands-on shopping gives her customers a way to feel, smell and select their favorite items in an immersive environment.

Formulary 55 is available in boutiques and shops in all 50 states, the UK and Japan, and can be purchased online. Smith’s products are available in Denver at the Perfect Petal. EsScentials in Ft. Collins and Sweet Water Flower Market in Colorado Springs also stock the brand.
