An Eclectic Loft Finally Comes to Life in Downtown Denver
The Interior embarks on a two-year journey to complete an in-house designer's vision for his space.
Can you walk us through the design process for this space? What was the overall vision and primary goal?
Our primary goal was to create a youthful design plan for a creative entertainer. We wanted the space to reflect the youthful nature of the client and his aesthetic. His personal style and keen eye really drove the design process. We wanted that to come through in the design of his space. There were a lot of hard surfaces and we wanted to layer with varied materials to bring warmth into the space.
What inspired the use of natural materials like wood and marble within this modern-industrial design?
The client inspired us to mix materials as he loved the “layered look” of varied materials such as Conrad woven shades, warm wood tones and terrazzo Waterworks tile. The process really began with Waterworks and his primary bathroom. We loved working with Bill at Waterworks.
How do the pops of color enhance the space’s atmosphere and sense of invitation?
The Great Plains blue drapery and Holly Hunt rug provided a calm base for the space and a sense of balance. We layered with gold, green and cream fabric tones. The walnut finish on the dining table, cocktail table and chair contributed to the warmth of the space.
Were there any standout moments or challenges during the design process that shaped the final outcome?
The biggest challenge was the location of the loft downtown. Coordinating contractors, installers, parking and the elevator were our biggest challenge. The elevator was down for 6 months and this loft is located on the fourth floor. The primary bedroom bed was walked up 4 flights of stairs in four pieces. So, essentially the installers walked 32 flights of stairs up and down to install the bed.
Is there anything about this project—its story, craftsmanship, or unique details—that you’d love people to know?
We purchased the dining table and chairs from the Regular Company represented at Carter Inc. at DDC. The client waited 18 months for the dining table and chairs. They are functional art. Each piece in this space was chosen for its specific level of design and iconic lines. This was driven by the client who has a passion and background in furniture design. A young, charismatic, witty, wise beyond his years, interior designer who happens to work with us at The Interior.
The project kept layering and evolving. We added the Urban Electric dining table light after the dining table was installed. This was not a start to finish project – we spent two years on the project. I feel this project will continue to grow and evolve.
