Tour this Spanish Revival Styled Kitchen with Modern Functionality

During the early 20th century, the influence of Spanish architecture and decor made its way to the United States with elements like warm and earthy tones, textured walls and wood accents. A sense of effortless juxtaposition between old-world charm and modern timelessness brought forth a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance that sparked the Spanish Revival style today.

When Courtney Wells, owner and principal of LuSi Design and Kaimee Martelli, owner and principal designer of Plum Kitchens were approached by a busy family of three young girls wanting a Spanish Revival style kitchen that was also functional in Bow Mar, they were up for the task.

“The renovation was a comprehensive transformation, keeping in mind the style of Spanish Revival charm. It included updating cabinetry, integrating modern appliances, and incorporating custom details like hand-glazed tiles and finish trim details that reflect what we love so much about the beauty of Spanish Revival,” says Wells.

Meticulous attention to detail while seamlessly blending timeless character with modern functionality were at the forefront of the entire design process. Taking over a year to complete, the team helped reimagine the kitchen’s much-needed efficiency by integrating more space.

“The new design added a back kitchen as well as a utility area tucked away by the back door to house kids’ gear as they come and go to school. Creating different zones in this large kitchen made for better use of the space [by] giving every area purpose,” shares Martelli. “[The] cabinetry is in a soft white oak tone, which pulls in the earthy aspect of Spanish Revival. Black and white cabinets were added to create additional balance while not distracting from the main focal points in the space.”

The homeowner’s unique artwork and love for shades of blue inspired the overall vision and use of hand-glazed tiles, echoing traditional Spanish ceramics. “The blue tiles act as a focal point, drawing the eye and adding energy to the space. The artwork complements the tiles by introducing a curated, personal touch, ensuring the kitchen feels warm and lived-in,” Wells notes.

“We drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape—the warm earth tones of the Rockies, the crisp blue skies, and the interplay of natural light unique to this region. Incorporating these elements helped ground the design in its Colorado setting while staying true to the timeless elegance of Spanish Revival style.”
