The Most Unique Hotels at the End of the World
22 luxurious escapes for an off-the-grid vacation

For many of us, a vacation means a trip to the mountains or a stay in a beach house for a week, phone and computer often in-hand. For Debbie Pappyn & David de Vleeschauwer, journalist and photographer respectively, they have been passionately exploring the world for remote holiday spots.

Their book, Remote Places To Stay: The Most Unique Hotels at the End of the World (gestalten 2019) rounds up 22 luxurious escapes for an off-the-grid vacation, from a rustic, idyllic beachfront hotel in West Iceland to a nomadic chic camping experience in Morocco.

"The concept of remoteness is shaped by intense silence, solitude, space, emptiness, secret doors, and pitch black, starry skies," say Pappyn and de Vleeschauwer. "These simple essentials can still be found, but only if you are ready to unplug and feel remote."

The book shares out-of-the-way places where you can get off the grid and reconnect to the essentials, surrounded by raw pristine nature. Some of these remote places are only accessible by foot, others by train, small boat, or bush plane—but they are all places with a very strong sense of space.

From lavish to spare architecture, from the Arctic to the desert landscapes of Africa, from a peaceful retreat in the Himalayas to a secret convent in the south of Italy, each exceptional retreat has been carefully selected to inspire and spark a state of wonder.

Broken down to include the backstory, accomodations, food and drink and must-do activities, the book provides a deeper look at each of the unique hotels. De Vleeschauwer's photography is stunning, making the book itself a feast for the eyes.
