Design and retail veteran Amy Foster may be the style alchemist of The Showroom @ Furniture Row, but her true calling is storytelling. Sitting in her Genevieve Gorder-wallpapered office, Foster enthusiastically rattles off the origins of a couple of her favorite pieces in the gallery, including rustic sculptures crafted from 200-year-old cypress roots extracted from Alabama swamps and wall art made with latex molds from a defunct balloon factory in India.
The self-described “starry-eyed, wanderlust-filled girl from Kansas” has traveled the world in her roles with Furniture Row, including more than 30 trips to Vietnam to collect textiles, art, decor and, yes, the stories behind each. Now as lead buyer for The Showroom—Furniture Row’s more glamorous, design-forward little sister—she expertly curates furniture and accessories from hundreds of global brands. Though the thousands of furnishings on the 170,000-square-foot showroom floor represent a range of styles, it’s no surprise that Foster gravitates toward the pieces that come with a rich history.
“I’ve always been fascinated by how creative humanity is,” she says. “I think if I connect to a romantic story about how something is made, someone else will too.”
