1. OUTDOOR KITCHENS
The biggest outdoor living trend is moving your indoor living spaces into the outdoors—particularly dining and kitchen spaces. Grills don’t just stand by themselves anymore. Now it’s full, complete kitchens with virtually the same materials as the home’s indoor culinary spaces (as almost all materials can be matched for exterior use). In particular, L-shaped kitchens and outdoor bars are increasingly popular.
2. COVERED SPACES
Backyard spots that are sheltered from sun and precipitation are extremely trendy this summer. If your outdoor space is particularly exposed to the sun, then a shaded area is a must. A covered area also allows you and your loved ones to lounge around a fire feature when it rains or snows—and not have to retreat indoors. Even four-season, retractable-glass sunrooms are gaining momentum.
3. STONE FIREPLACES
Stone fireplaces are taking the lead in the luxury backyard market—not only are they better shielded from the wind than fire pits, but they are also a fantastic focal point, whether exposed or in a covered outdoor room.
4. SUNKEN, IN-GROUND FIRE PITS
The lower the profile, the more heat a fire pit emits for those gathered around it. Submersed, ground level fire pits are becoming increasingly popular in 2017 as either an alternative to a fireplace or as a supplement to one.
5. PORCELAIN
Porcelain is the name of the game this year—and we don’t see the trend going anywhere. Porcelain pavers in large-format tile is all the rage, as well as porcelain wood veneer for decking systems, planters, and fireplaces.
6. HIGH-END FURNITURE
People aren’t going to the home improvement stores for their outdoor furniture anymore. Instead, plush, luxurious, and durable furniture is being carefully vetted and purchased from high-end outdoor furniture designers and retailers.
