Before & After: A Total Closet Makeover
"We've lived here for 19-and-a-half years," says homeowner Michelle O'Dorisio of her home in Golden, Colorado, "and almost every year we've remodeled or updated something." So when it came time to consider moving to a new house, the O'Dorisios looked at multiple homes in the area and learned quickly that many homes had not been so lucky. "Everything felt outdated," O'Dorisio laments. "We decided to invest in what we had instead of buying a new house."
The couple decided to design an addition to the back side of their home near Green Mountain in Golden, Colorado, and Michelle knew that the long and narrow walk-in closet adjacent to the master suite was going to need a major overhaul. "We both couldn't be in there without bumping into each other!" Her husband is a businessman who owns many suits, and she has quite the collection of fashionable handbags and shoes, so they both said goodbye to the original white built-ins and said hello to a much larger wardrobe wonderland.

After an extensive inventory of the couple’s clothing and accessories, the design team carefully planned and assembled a closet structure not only in the original space—which now serves as “his” main closet—but also in the additional square footage, which predominantly acts as “hers.”
"What I love most about the final design is the functionality," O'Dorisio says. "It's so organized and showcases everything we have—without feeling cluttered."
Numerous drawers, hanging systems, and glass shelves line the space, offering a lovely balance of form and function. Several LED lights highlight the design and add a touch of glamour. The back-lit mirror above the his-and-hers hutch dresser is perfect for illuminating the jewelry display case in its top drawers, and the glass-lit shelves in the handbag display case exude a magical glow. A large hamper is hidden in the bottom drawer to the right of the dresser, keeping the design neat and tidy.
To ensure that the couple’s fine collection of wearable treasures is safe, many drawers and cases employ stealth locks that can be remote-controlled; all unlocked drawers can be easily secured (and vice versa) with the touch of button.
The bottom drawers of this large mirrored closet system (pictured above, left) offer push-to-open storage; behind the mirrored doors sits an extensive shoe collection. The best part? The doors open to form a three-way mirror for the ultimate outfit-planning experience, without sacrificing wall or floor space.
It's safe to say O'Dorisio is pleased with this most recent home revamp. "Out of all the updates we've made over the years, this closet is by far my favorite."
