Designing a barn to accommodate her three retired English jumping horses, an avid equestrian client wanted an elegant and functional space. Designed by Architect, Todd Remington, and built by Bud Vadas Construction, the structure’s interior was beautifully appointed by Joei McIntire, principal and owner at Joei McIntire Design. Situated on five-acres of land just 25-feet from the main residence, the approximately 300 square-foot barn was completed in 2025.

The three-stall facility features a feed room, tack room, horse washing room, refrigeration for medication, and tractor access. Sixty-inch fans and a custom cupola help keep the horses cool in the warmer months. Barn doors open fully on each side to provide the space with added ventilation.

“The project was incredibly fun because the client really allowed the design team to be creative,” says McIntire. “We went with bold statement choices including plaid Mulberry wallpaper from England and saturated spaces in a rich, green Benjamin Moore paint.”

Tongue-in-groove paneling adds polish and sophistication. Custom doorway casings feature carved wood that matches the patterns of the brass finials. The stable pendant lighting is dark green and brass. The chandelier in the tack room is a brass Ralph Lauren, paying homage to the equestrian style with brass stripped details and British tan leather straps.

The furnishings in the barn were sourced from a Hudson Valley estate sale and offer luxe, dedicated comfort and a spot to enjoy a coffee. An adjacent pasture provides the horses with space to run, and a separate arena is located on the other side of the property.

Additional details include horse bit brass hardware pulls, and custom casing with horse bit and stirrup detailing.  Custom nameplates and black iron horseshoes embellish each stable opening. A comprehensive fire mitigation system ensures the protection and safety of the horses.

Separate enclosures on the property offer shelter for chickens and goats, making it a true country lifestyle residence with easy proximity to city amenities.

“When the barn was finished, we had it professionally photographed. We let the goats out thinking they would walk through the space. Instead, they surprised us by hopping up on the table we styled in the center of the aisle,” McIntire recounts. “It provided the most unexpected fun, which really speaks to the entire project experience.”
