Artisanal, hand-knotted rugs add color, dimension and texture to any interior space. To learn more about them, Colorado Homes & Lifestyles spoke to Stephanie Holmes, owner of Integral Thread Studio, to discover what makes a hand-knotted rug unique.

What is a hand-knotted rug for those unfamiliar with the term?

Stephanie Holmes (SH): A hand-knotted area rug is made by skilled artisans one knot at a time. One rug can have thousands or millions of knots depending on its quality, and every knot is completed by hand. The knots become part of the rug’s surface, forming the patterns, colors and textures we see. For this reason, no two rugs are alike.

What steps are involved in creating a high-quality hand-knotted rug?

SH: From sheep farmers and fiber spinners to map makers, designers, dye masters and weavers, each artisan plays an integral role in bringing a functional work of art into a client’s home.

The process begins with the farmer who harvests the raw material. Skilled spinners transform the fibers into yarn. Next, a dye master creates the desired colors. Dyed and dried yarns are delivered to the weaver, who has already prepared the loom and follows a detailed rug map to serve as a guide. Finally, the woven rug is refined, and texture, dimension and detail are brought to life. After meticulous inspection, it is packed for its journey from rural weaving villages to the client.

How can hand-knotted textiles elevate interior design?

SH: Textiles engage nearly all our senses. They captivate the eye; they are tactile and even carry a specific scent that speaks to their natural fibers. A thoughtfully chosen rug can become the defining focal point of a room or serve as a quiet foundation.

What is the best way to select the right rug for a space?

SH: Begin by selecting the rug first. This will streamline the process of adding additional design elements later. Think of the rug as the anchor of the room. Material selection is important. How it feels underfoot and its day-to-day function are achieved with materials that balance beauty, comfort and durability.

Consider scale. A rug that is too small can make a space feel disconnected, while the proper size creates a sense of proportion. Finally, choose a rug that truly speaks to you. A lasting impression is the enduring beauty of a well-curated rug. Its greatest contribution is to set the stage, bringing every element in the room together with effortless elegance.
