From May to October each year, the sounds from electric saws, drills, and hammers echo in neighborhoods around the metro area. Each month, volunteers gather at the homes of individuals who live with physical disabilities to build accessible ramps, patios, and landings. Each project increases independence and safety for the recipient and all work is completed free of charge.

During the 15th year of Home Builders Foundation’s annual Blitz Build initiative, dozens of volunteer crews will build new pathways to independence for individuals across the metro Denver area who are living with physical disabilities. Blitz Build projects will grace neighborhoods from Parker to Longmont and clients ranging from age 14 to 81 will have new-found access to their homes and yards.

Jim R., who faces daily challenges due to Multiple Sclerosis, and his 93-year-old mother-in-law, whose mobility has decreased due to aging, were among the first clients during this year’s Blitz Build. A volunteer crew from Berkeley Homes built a front entry ramp, added a railing along the backyard steps, and rebuilt the garage entry stairs – improvements that now allow the family to live more safely and independently at home. Jim was amazed at how quickly the crew completed the work.

Project Captain Larry Malone said that the Berkeley team looks forward to their Blitz Build Day each year. “Everyone joins in and it’s a very joyful day,” said Malone. “Being able to elevate a family’s life just by donating a few hours of our time is an incredible feeling.” Jim says that the completed projects provide him and his family with freedom. He shared, “For the first time since I’ve lived here, I can now step out the front door and go down the ramp to walk the dogs. My mother-in-law can go out to get the mail or talk with the neighbors without waiting for assistance. And, my wife can leave the house without worrying about our safety.”

This year’s Blitz Build kicked off on May 15 and will continue through October, with one three-day Blitz Build weekend each month. By the end of the Blitz Build season, HBF anticipates that 25 clients will have new ramps. Since the initiation of Blitz Build in 2011, 265 ramps, landings and patios – with a total retail value of more than $1.1 million – have been built and installed. The goal is to provide individuals who have a physical disability with more safety and independence when entering and leaving their homes and accessing the community.

The average cost of a residential ramp is $5,500, which is often more than families struggling with multiple medical bills can afford. Sponsors and material donations cover the costs so that the ramps are completely free to the clients. Spots for Blitz Build volunteer crews fill quickly each year; however, HBF has additional opportunities for volunteers to get involved throughout the year.
