One of the greatest gifts you can give your home is exterior lighting. From enhancing the natural beauty of your home to transforming ordinary spaces to adding safety and security, outdoor lighting can (literally) make your property shine. Here are five exterior lighting tips to get you started.
Use uplighting for dramatic results. Lights that shine upward on your home create a striking effect, highlight architectural details and make smaller homes appear larger at night. Place uplighting on both the right and left sides for best results.
Balance your lighting. Wall sconces, porch lights and gas lights can create “light noise” – make sure your exterior lighting plan doesn’t compete with other lights on your house.
Consider your views. Avoid shining lights on windows—it creates a glare on the outside, and, you’ll block your view from the inside.

Function matters. Many homeowners purchase solar path lights attracted by the low price points, ease of installation and the eco-friendly power source only to be dimly disappointed on the first night of use. Think about the functional needs of your lights and if your selections will illuminate as you anticipate.
Check power sources. Before purchasing landscape lighting systems, test your load source, to ensure you have ample power to support.
With proper planning, exterior lighting enhances the beauty of your property, adds security and increases the value of your home—all benefits you’ll appreciate for many years to come.
