Sustainable Outdoor Design is Here to Stay
Recent surveys reveal a striking 69% of respondents emphasized the importance of utilizing sustainable materials in their home design options
In the realm of outdoor design, sustainability has firmly established itself as a guiding principle for both Creative Living and a significant majority of Americans. This surge in eco-consciousness is not just a fleeting fascination but a profound shift in consumer behavior, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental issues and a commitment to responsible living. Here, we share some of the many ways our manufacturers are getting on board.
Eco-friendly practices & synthetic substitutes
Many luxury furniture manufacturers are making significant strides in sustainability by adopting eco-friendly practices throughout the product lifecycle. Some of our Scandinavian vendors utilize bamboo or teak instead of traditional woods, both of which are grown quickly and easily replenished. Additionally, many boast a range of eco-friendly initiatives from their commitment to using recycled materials and textiles, and incorporating recycled plastics into designs. A few manufacturers contribute a percentage of their sales to local environmental organizations, further cementing their commitment to making a positive impact.
Other manufacturers are taking on a biomimetic approach to materials, reconstructing wood-like substances from synthetic materials. This results in a sustainable, zero-waste material that combines the best aspects of natural and composite wood. This bio-wood has the look and feel of real wood, but is more durable and without the environmental impact.
A few of our most trusted vendors utilize marine grade polymer (MGP) or HDPE which contains over 30% recycled resin and is fully recyclable. Their commitment to recycling waste demonstrates a long-standing dedication to environmental responsibility, earning a number of our partners accolades such as the ICFA Design Excellence award.
Stainless steel is taking center stage
The surge in sustainable design is exemplified by industry leaders like Danver, Trex and Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens, especially in outdoor kitchen spaces where exposure to varying weather conditions demands durable and resilient materials. Stainless steel, hailed as a recycled marvel with minimal maintenance requirements and an extended lifespan, stainless steel aligns perfectly with sustainability goals. Innovations in powder coat technologies allow consumers to personalize their outdoor spaces while adhering to eco-friendly principles.
Harnessing solar energy
Beyond material choices, another notable trend in the industry involves some of our European designer lines actively integrating solar energy into their manufacturing processes, with a goal to run entirely on solar energy by 2026. Tackling plastic pollution by using 100% recycled ocean plastic for their pillows and fillers their commitment extends to fabrication processes, too. By using non-toxic chemicals, recycling over spray particles, and designing furniture with easy maintenance in mind their investment in technology aims to reduce material waste and enhance the durability of their products.
