Sustainable Design and Luxury Textiles Go Hand-In-Hand
Beautiful, landfill-bound fabric is used to make an impactful design statement.
Molly Reinhardt, founder, owner and designer at Studio M has loved vintage clothing and high-end textiles since she was a teenager. “While working in the design industry, I noticed large black bags being carried to the dumpster and wondered what was inside,” she says.
“I waited until everyone had left for the day, went outside, and jumped into the dumpsters to find out.” What she discovered were bags of luxe, high-end fabrics that were being discarded, and she immediately knew they had a different destiny.
Repurposing the sumptuous fabric remnants to create pillows made complete sense to Reinhardt. Utilizing the textiles saved them from clogging up the landfill and gave them a new life. “Studio M turns wasted fabrics into designer treasure,” she explains. “Working cooperatively with four seamstresses, we make about 12,000 hidden zipper pillows a month.” Pillows may be purchased in sets of two, or as single pieces.
“Pillows in unexpected colors are often exactly what an interior design needs for a fresh pop of color and personality, or a new design update,” says Reinhardt. “Clients can make an appointment and receive guidance regarding what will look great in their space while adhering to their taste and aesthetic.”
Reinhardt works in tandem with designers and clients to offer unique, colorful hand-sewn pillows and bolsters for both residential and commercial spaces. Items can be purchased from available stock online, or custom made through collaboration with clients and area designers.
Reinhardt is a sought-after speaker and panelist. Her expertise in low waste, sustainable design practices offer a refreshing point of view within the interior design industry. “Studio M annually diverts 15 to 30 tons of designer textiles from Colorado’s landfills, proving that luxury doesn’t have to be synonymous with waste,” she explains.
“A sustainable ethos is a valuable way to spread the word about sustainability.” Reinhardt says that sharing green business strategies helps others realize how they have the potential to reduce their carbon footprint.
In June 2025, Studio M will open a showroom in the IDC Building in Denver. This will give clients the opportunity to visit in-person and touch, feel and experience the textiles. All of Studio M’s pillows can be recovered later for an update. “Pillows are a great way to make a splash and add color and perspective without having to make a forever commitment,” she says.
