A well-designed kitchen is an investment in daily living, but preserving its beauty requires more than just admiration. While many homeowners focus on layout and finishes during the design process, long-term performance is shaped by how each material is cared for. Understanding how to maintain your kitchen’s surfaces can help protect its value and ensure years of enjoyment.

Start With the Right Tools

A pH-neutral dish soap and a soft cloth or sponge are the gold standards for daily cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools, which can dull finishes or damage surfaces. For tougher stains or occasional deep cleaning, specialized products—such as universal cleaning paste for laminate and wood veneers or artificial stone cleaners—can lift dirt gently while preserving the integrity of the material.

Cabinet Dos & Don’ts

Cabinet surfaces should be wiped regularly with a soft, damp cloth, followed by drying with a clean towel. For lacquered or soft-touch finishes, never use scouring agents, bleach, or solvent-based cleaners. A microfiber cloth paired with a manufacturer-recommended product is often the safest option. And don’t forget the interior—pull-outs and drawer inserts benefit from the same gentle routine.

Glass Panels & Shelving

Glass-front cabinets and open shelving elevate the look of a kitchen by creating visual lightness and a sense of openness, but they also show dust, fingerprints and smudges more easily. Regular cleaning with a non-ammonia glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth will help keep glass surfaces crystal clear.

Most glass used in cabinetry or shelving has one etched or matte side and one smooth, glossy side. The etched side—often installed facing inward—tends to trap more dust and can be more difficult to clean. Avoid using abrasive pads, which can scratch or cloud this surface. Instead, gently wipe with a damp microfiber cloth followed by a dry, lint-free cloth to avoid streaking. For interior glass shelves, remove items before cleaning to prevent buildup around displayed objects.

Countertop Care, by Material

Whether your kitchen features natural stone, engineered surfaces, wood or stainless steel, each material requires its own care approach. Artificial stone stays looking its best with weekly cleaning using a designated cleaner and a pH-neutral soap rinse. Wood countertops, such as butcher block, need regular oiling with food-safe mineral oil and wiping with a damp—not wet—cloth. Stainless steel benefits from microfiber polishing to minimize water spots and fingerprints.

Protecting High-End Appliances

Luxury appliances—such as those from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove—are engineered to perform, but proper care helps preserve both function and appearance. Stainless steel exteriors should be cleaned with a non-abrasive cloth and a product specifically designed for appliance-grade finishes. Oven interiors should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s guidance and filters in built-in refrigerators and dishwashers should be replaced on schedule. Be sure to register products for service reminders and use only recommended cleaning products to avoid voiding warranties.

Smart Habits Make a Big Impact

A few good habits go a long way. Always use cutting boards and trivets to protect counters from scratches and heat damage. Wipe up spills promptly—especially around appliances and sinks—to prevent staining or warping. And test any new cleaning product in an inconspicuous area before applying it more broadly.

By understanding your kitchen’s materials and committing to simple care routines, you can protect your investment and enjoy a space that performs beautifully for years to come.
