Out On The Town: Free Market

What to do and shop for at Dairy Block’s new industrial-themed bazaar

Ah, Dairy Block, you have outdone yourself yet again. I thought I was entirely content with your alleyway of cornhole games, Milk Market’s truffled mushroom pasta and Blanchard Wine’s patio bar. Alas, you’ve infiltrated my bank account and interrupted my ongoing practice of frugality—and yet, I am absolutely on board with it.

Denver’s newest multi-concept marketplace is not of the same variety as its neighboring Milk Market, but instead appeals to the on-trend shopper. Even Free Market’s interior aesthetic is cool; the market exudes an industrious, Scandi-style that gives a warm hug upon entering.  

Westerlind, Free Market. 

Expect a collection of high-end brands, boutiques and items, but this is by no means a run-of-the-mill shopping center. Each store’s inventory is thoughtfully curated, with the Parisian-style totes of Clare V. fitting perfectly adjacent to the outdoor garb of Westerlind. 

From the pro haircuts of Rosemont Barber Shop to the quality jeans of AYR, there’s a little something for everyone at the market. While each store is worth a little meandering, these are some of my top picks upon visiting Free Market.

With a focus on neutrals, timeless wardrobe essentials and quality construction, the California-lifestyle brand is bringing its thoughtfully curated inventory to Denver. I flocked to their Italian shoe selection, including nude leather strapped sandals, animal-print mules and fall-favorite black chelsea boots.

As a (self-proclaimed) ski bum, I’m always on the hunt for a stylish coat to wear for hitting the fresh powder. Westerlind specializes in selecting ultra-cool, unisex outdoor clothing meant for wearing from the mountains to the sea. Apart from the outerwear, I was drawn to the chunky knit sweaters, masculine jumpsuits and endless hat options.

I’m the first to admit that I’m a little forgetful when it comes to carrying a bag. That's why I tend to gravitate towards crossbody styles so I don’t have to constantly worry about it. Clare V. has shelves of this style coming in different sizes, patterns and colors. A bonus I enjoyed: their unique crossbody straps can be bought individually, like this chain, to allow more autonomy with your styling. Crossbodies not your thing? They also have an ample amount of clutches, totes and backpacks. 

Esteemed grain-king Kelly Whittaker continues expansion around Denver with the addition of his restaurant Brutø, the home of ever-changing pizza flatbread and homemade doughs. If you haven’t been able to snag a reservation at one of his other bustling spots (like Boulder’s Basta or The Wolf’s Tailor in Sunnyside), this over-the-counter alternative is still a great way to get a taste of what he’s cooking.
