May 2018: What the Editor is Loving
A beyond cliché line of lights, an homage to the messiness of life, and a bird-inspired seat
An email from Mullan Lighting came attached with a strikingly beautiful and beyond cliché line of lights. Upon further research I found that A) they have a large collection of decorative lights that can be used outside, and B) the founder of this 55-person company is an Irish architect named Mike Treanor, and the company has rejuvenated Mullan village in Ireland by restoring the town’s abandoned shoe factory and stone-built houses, closed since the 1970s. These three pendants—the Splendor brass, the Berlin copper and the Rio vintage—are among my favorites. They start at about $170; mullanlighting.com.
The Maverick Soul: Portraits of the Lives & Homes of Eccentric, Eclectic & Free-spirited Bohemians by Miv Watts & Hugh Stewart, Hardie Grant Publishing, $50; available on amazon.com. “These homes can be cluttered and chaotic or cool and clean-lined, but they are never contrived—the emphasis being on passion, never on trend,” writes Miv Watts, who looks into the lives and homes of artists, photographers, stylists and musicians. Hugh Stewart’s photos seem to breathe and feel the stories told within. This is a stunning homage to the spirit and messiness of life, eccentricity and the lovely patina that comes only with time.
I am a sucker for birds of all kinds, and my husband spends more money than I’d care to admit on seed for our feeders. So, I was predisposed to love this Century Gwen Chair with Bird Fabric when I came upon it during a wander through Hoff Miller in the Denver Design District.
