“You don’t have to pull out all the stops to give your living room an update,” says Maria Matlin, principle at Aesthetic Future Design Studio. “There are several easily accomplished changes that can revitalize the look and feel of your room.” Relatively new to Colorado, Matlin has been an interior designer since 2004. She previously owned a lifestyle boutique carrying home goods, antiques, and clothing in Minneapolis.

Examine Your Room’s Base Layer

“Some of the easiest changes to make involve upgrading the layers giving a room a complete feel,” says Matlin. “Introduce a new color scheme with a rug, an inviting throw, or some accent pillows. “If you have fine furniture worth reupholstering, it’s a great way to give beloved pieces a whole new life.”

Consider Your View

Another impactful change is the purchase of new window treatments. “These days, window treatments have become more affordable and attainable than ever before,” Matlin points out.  She says she’s seeing more natural and bamboo shades—either on their own or layered with drapes. “Space dictates what will work, but this change can have a dramatic effect.”

Shine a Light

Enhance the functionality and freshen the mood by reconsidering your lighting. If you have more traditional light fixtures, combining them with simple pieces will add an unexpected twist. “Don’t be afraid to mix styles,” she urges. “Ornate heirlooms can be perfect next to a modern piece to make an eclectic statement.”

If These Walls Could Talk

Art and its placement have a crucial impact in any room. Often a primary source of color, art is a curated statement. Matlin says she likes to do a walk-through to see what’s on the walls. “Finding new locations for existing art is a great way to switch things up; and placement is imperative.” Art should be hung at the right height with the correct lighting to maximize its beauty. She advises, “Looking for just the right thing over time or grabbing the perfect find when you see it are both great ways to source new pieces.”

Don’t Forget Your Surfaces

Decorative enhancements like a stack of books, contrasting elements, and items composed of mixed materials, textures, and styles enliven a room. “Fresh flowers are always special,” she notes. “Treat yourself to a weekly batch of blooms arranged in a favorite vase or piece of glassware.”
