Kitchen Distributors – Troy Williams
CH&L: Clients come to you for…
Troy Williams: Expertise and an education. Few people will remodel more than one kitchen or bathroom in their lifetime. While many clients have ideas about what they may want in their finished kitchen or bathroom, they may not know the steps they need to take to get there. We help consumers understand the design process and make sure they understand what they are buying and how it will function; I feel that educated consumers make the design process easier. As they assist in making design decisions they also take ownership of the end results—and ultimately enjoy the experience even more.
CH&L: Your design philosophy is…
TW: Don’t overcomplicate things. Start with a basic layout or plan for the space. Sometimes the best solution to a problem will be the first solution you come up with. Once the layout is determined, it’s easy to move onto the details such as cabinetry door styles, or counter materials, or plumbing fixtures. The plan is the plan, no matter what you do to change the outward appearance. The function of the plan will dictate the use of the space and the details are what give the space its character.
CH&L: Your style is influenced by…
TW: Never doing the same thing twice. Each home and each client is different. I always try to take cues from the homeowner as to what means the most to them and then find ways to incorporate those ideas into their finished space. Style can be influenced by the colors in a piece of art in an adjacent room or by the texture or style of a piece of antique furniture they want incorporated into the final design. Asking questions of the homeowner and finding out what matters most to them helps to better define the best style for their finished kitchen or bathroom.
CH&L: The most inspiring thing you’ve seen lately is…
TW: The multitude of new styles of counter materials that were introduced last spring at KBIS by quartz surfacing companies like Cambria and Silestone. The bold new colors and patterns offer clients a wide range of options that might have otherwise required a natural stone.
CH&L: Every home must have…
TW: Comfort and purpose. Comfort is not just tangible in the way a sofa or chair feels when you are seated but is also felt as an emotional connection that a homeowner has within their space. That feeling of comfort can come from many things and the overall design of any space plays a key role in that feeling. Purposeful design is important whether you are designing a large kitchen for entertaining or a small laundry room on a second floor of a home. If not planned well it will not function the way it was intended or expected, thus affecting the overall comfort of the space.
CH&L: Share with us one of your go-to design resources…
TW: I always tend to look for resources where I can get a wide range of service in one place without the need to travel all over the state with clients. I have found Capco Tile & Stone of Denver to be that kind of resource. The combination of the tile showroom and stone & quartz slab department makes it easy to bring clients in and show them a multitude of options and help them to make decisions about products for their finished space.
CH&L: Tell us about one of the latest trends you are seeing…
TW: While the trend of clean lines and minimalist details is nothing new, the things I’ve been most impressed with lately are the interior features of cabinets that have more contemporary styling. Not wanting to have a cluttered look on the counters is key, so unique interior storage systems from Richelieu and Blum, just to name a couple, have made it easier to keep the counters clean and the necessary items within easy reach.
