Five Under Forty: Adam Gilmer
Berglund Architects | Edwards
Integrating high-tech modules into his architectural design is an essential tool for principal architect Adam Gilmer, principal at Berglund Architects in Edwards, CO. “I love the collaboration between our entire team that begins in the design process with simple sketches, then modeling the spaces in 3D in the computer, then finally experiencing the finished space. The process is very rewarding.”
Gilmer has been bringing projects to life at Berglund Architects since 2005. Upon graduation from CU Boulder with a degree in environmental design, Gilmer joined the firm as its second employee. The Colorado native has since been a leader in computer modeling. “I have extensive experience in three‐dimensional computer modeling, which has been a critical design tool in several of the complex residences and mixed‐use projects upon which we have worked,” he tells us. “These 3D computer models have become a significant part of the design and planning approval processes as well as developers’ presentation materials for sales documents.”
A passion for sustainable building practices is also evident in Gilmer’s work. “The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED] program ensures an environmentally sound, green home by documenting the assemblies, energy use and waste during and after construction,” Gilmer explains. “If a home does not go down the LEED path, the home should be designed and built with energy-efficient assemblies that surpass code requirements.”
In addition to working in harmony with the environment at work, Gilmer enjoys spending time outdoors during his free time. “Growing up in Colorado, it is easy to say that I am inspired by the mountains. Hans and Stephanie (the two other principals at Berglund) also inspire me to be a better architect and try to pass the amazing skills they gave me on to our younger designers.”
HOW TIME FLIES
“Reflecting back over the last 16 years, I can’t help but think how fast it has gone. From being a young draftsperson working above Hans’ garage to managing to keep the doors open through the recession and becoming licensed, all the while learning how to run a successful firm both in design and financially has been a dream come true.”
ENERGY-SAVING PRO TIP
“Limiting solar heat gain in the summer and increasing it in the winter is a simple way to save energy.”
INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION
“I am a mentor to younger and older staff members by using my construction observation experience to train and identify potential problems in design models and drawings before they are implemented in the field.”
FAMILY TIES
“My wife, a nurse, inspires me to put others’ needs before my own; she has such a big heart. Seeing the joy in the simple things that bring my son happiness also inspires me.”
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
“I was raised in Evergreen, so I like to spend time in nature, hiking, biking and skiing.”
