ColoradoScapes: A Fresh Perspective on Landscaping
The next generation of Colorado-focused xeriscaping explained.
The Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado have introduced a new landscaping initiative called ColoradoScapes—landscapes designed specifically for Colorado’s unique climate. The approach emphasizes native, water-wise plants, efficient irrigation and water-saving turf to create outdoor spaces that conserve water, reduce replacement costs and remain beautiful year-round. The term is intentionally Colorado-specific and serves as a modern replacement for the idea behind xeriscaping.
At its core, ColoradoScaping conjures up an image of our beautiful, natural landscape that is all around us. Colorado’s palette of native plants along with colorful drought tolerant trees, shrubs, and perennials can create beautiful, lush landscapes that thrive in our climate.
Key Characteristics of Coloradoscaping
Native and water-wise plants
Relies on plant selections naturally suited to Colorado’s climate, reducing water use while avoiding invasive species.
Seasonal vibrancy
Embraces a palette of plants that shine in every season, ensuring year-round beauty and interest.
Ecosystem support
Prioritizes plantings that nurture native insects, birds and wildlife, strengthening the natural rhythms of the local environment.
Balanced design
Blends plantings, mulch and thoughtfully placed rock to create landscapes that feel cohesive, intentional and visually refined.
Elevated hardscaping
Incorporates patios and outdoor living areas that not only reduce high-water-use zones but also enhance the way homeowners relax and entertain.
Water-smart turf options
Makes room for turf where it truly adds value, choosing next-generation varieties—such as Tahoma 31—that deliver the look and feel of a lawn while using up to 60% less water.
Water conservation
Significantly reduces water consumption compared to traditional turf-heavy landscapes, contributing to long-term savings and sustainability.
Lower maintenance
Minimizes the need for mowing, fertilizing and routine upkeep, giving homeowners more time to enjoy their outdoor spaces.
The team at Designscapes Colorado has been involved in helping to support this program with the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado and Colorado State University Extension. We will continue to blend water-wise design and native plantings for year-round appeal. ColoradoScaping shows how sustainable choices can also be stunning ones. It’s a landscaping philosophy rooted in Colorado—and ready for the future.
