Establishing a Niche for Colorado Wines
Winery helps introduce state-grown grape varieties and boosts agricultural tourism
“The sky is the limit to what we can produce,” says Kevin Webber, chief executive officer at Carboy Winery. The winery has become known throughout the world for helping bring attention to Colorado-grown grapes and wines with innovative profiles and aromas. “We love the opportunity to introduce our wines to established aficionados and new wine consumers.”
Carboy Winery was founded in 2014 and originally sourced grapes from around the world to blend and age, making the wine their own. The wines, introduced at the 2017 Aspen Food & Wine Festival, were met with great fanfare and approval. This initial success prompted the company to re-think and pivot, growing Colorado grapes with the idea of making Colorado wine the “best wine out there.” An existing vineyard and winery in Grand Valley were purchased to add to their 10,000 square foot manufacturing facility and tasting room in Littleton. Later, Carboy Winery expanded westward, purchasing an additional vineyard in Washington state’s Horse Haven Hills. Now, Carboy makes Colorado and Washington wines and is leading the charge into the wild west of winemaking. As one of the largest wine producers in the state, Carboy operates tasting rooms in Denver, Littleton, Breckenridge and Palisade.
Sustainability is an integral commitment of the Carboy Winery ethos. Carboy is a 1% for the Planet member and has pledged to donate one percent of all tasting room sales to support environmental partner Zero Foodprint and its Restore Colorado campaign, promoting regenerative agriculture and carbon farming. Vineyard activities are responsible for 40 percent of wines’ total carbon footprint. By using drought tolerant crops, micro sprinklers, and drip irrigation, Carboy minimizes their environmental impact and conserves water. The use of 300-gallon Brite tank systems and stainless-steel kegs in their tasting rooms saves over 750,000 glass bottles, corks, and corrugated packing boxes from being discarded in recycling facilities and landfills.
At Carboy Winery, there is an added focus on creating new varieties of sparkling wines, the fastest growing in popularity around the world. “Colorado’s short growing season makes it ideal for cultivating and manufacturing sparkling wines,” Webber points out. “Sparkling wines appeal to wine drinkers across the board and can help put Colorado winemaking on the national map.”
Carboy Winery sites offer tastings, tours, private events, and a wine club. Their products include five distinctive white, red, and sparkling wines, wine seltzers, and ciders.
