A Fresh Take on a Washington Park Denver Home
Clean lines and a masculine touch suit the owner perfectly.
The new owner of an east Washington Park bungalow took stock of the 3,000 square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bathroom home before moving in. He knew his new digs needed a splash of attention that would make it truly feel like his own.
He chose to work with Rachel Ogburn, owner and principal designer at Rowe Interior Design, to refresh the entry, living and dining rooms, the home office, and the primary bedroom to better suit his aesthetic.
After an initial visit to determine the design direction, Ogburn got to work creating an interior that married simplicity, coziness and masculinity. The owner grew up in Colorado, and spent time as an adult in Japan, so he embraced an affinity for both mountain and Asian influences gravitating toward simple silhouettes, soft fabrics and textured layers.
“I tackled the project by incorporating fresh paint and wallcoverings, updated lighting, and new furniture and art,” says Ogburn. “We didn’t alter the original floor plan. Instead, we accommodated it by making the best use of the space.” Round elements contrast with right angles giving interest throughout the renovated areas. A warm color palette makes the spaces feel welcoming.
The entryway makes a statement with a console table and hair-on-hide ottomans by Lexington. “One of my favorite art pieces is the Buffalo print on the wall,” says Ogburn. “If you look closely, you can see that the bison is surrounded by the outline of a room, highlighting the juxtaposition of confined and open spaces.
The living room features a seating arrangement composed of a comfortable sofa and petite camel leather chairs. The fireplace is flanked by eye catching shelving and a blanket ladder. The area rug lends a cozy softness to the space. A floor lamp by Regina Andrew, and pillows and a throw add to the room’s cozy feel.
The simplicity of the dining room lets the view of the outdoors and natural light shine against the clean lines of the table, chairs and chandelier. The room has a wow factor that allows restraint to make a beautiful statement. The primary bedroom features a bold, Japanese-inspired mural wallcovering with a masculine vibe complemented by a Jaipur Living braided wool area rug. Small touches add big impact. The side tables by Four Hands Design are embellished with simple leather handles, and the mixed textiles on the bed add depth and drama.
“It was really fun to create both symmetry and balance,” Ogburn notes. “The warm colors and thoughtful styling helped the rooms come alive beautifully.”
