A Cottage Perched on a Hill Creates an Idyllic Family Retreat
This second home is a perfect getaway all year round
A Dallas-based family enjoyed their collaboration with Yates Desygn on their primary residence in suburban Dallas, so it was an easy decision to work with them a second time on their vacation home in Telluride, Colorado. The firm’s work ethos is based upon “pulling from the clients’ design language, preferences, and lifestyle to create an environment best suited to their needs.”
In this case, the owners wanted a rustic, mountain vibe that he likes, combined with an uptown aesthetic she prefers. A mixture of contemporary, rustic, and eclectic elements fused to beget a look incorporating the best of both. “The goal was to craft a space that invites people to gather and relax,” says Principal Designer, Bryan Yates. “The family of five love to invite guests to join them in the mountains. This home can accommodate them, and they can host another family whenever they wish.”
Yates says they began with a comprehensive refresh that included new paint, tile, and lighting. The resulting muted color palette, warm wood flooring and cabinetry, and stainless appliances is enlivened with pops of cool blues and greens, and warm corals and golds. The home’s interior receives an abundance of natural light, so the windows were left uncovered to let the sunshine in and provide unobstructed views of the surrounding terrain.
Keeping the family’s budget in mind, Yates points out that all the furniture is brand new. “We were careful to select performance fabric and leather for durability,” he explains. “The owners didn’t want anything in the house to be so precious that it couldn’t be replaced if something became damaged.” Bunk beds were added to maximize sleeping space. Furnishings and bedding were intentionally chosen with sink-in-and-relax comfort in mind to encourage the family and their guests to put their feet up while vacationing.
“The owner is an artist by trade, and her work adorns the walls” notes Yates. Other touches to the décor include bringing objects found in nature indoors to provide a cohesive look. A splash of whimsy can be found in the powder room with wallpaper chosen by the homeowners. Brass fixtures enhance the look by picking up the color on the walls.
“This experience was very enjoyable,” Yates remarks. “We especially loved this collaboration because it was fun and seamless, and the clients trusted us to create a look that works equally in both the winter and the warmer months.”
