A Unique Twist to the Classic Dulce de Leche
All about a local Park Hill Latin-based eatery's sensational rendition of a nostalgic Latin recipe
Situated in the quaint neighborhood of Park Hill, Lucina Eatery & Bar brings charm and modernity to Latin cuisine in Denver. Bold and vibrant flavors inspire the menu as it pays tribute to tradition and roots. Luciana Eatery & Bar – named after its Owner and Chef Erasmo Casiano’s mother Lucina – not only entices the senses, but also brings the community together.
Beyond its menu of platos, grandes, paella del momento, and porcion, taking a peek at its dessert selection is a must. There you’ll meet the Banana con Dulce de Leche.
“Drawing from Chef and Co-Owner Diego Coconati’s Argentinian roots, our delightful Dulce de Leche with Bananas transcends mere dessert—it’s a nostalgic journey back to the bustling kitchen of Diego’s childhood home,” Casiano shares. “Diego’s childhood snack was simplicity itself. A ripe banana, sliced, and cradled by a generous spoonful of dulce de leche. The combination was alchemy—a burst of creamy sweetness that transcended time and place. It was comfort in a bite, a secret shared between generations.”
If you know, you know. Soft, sticky, sweet, layered, textured. A truly one-of-a-kind gastronomical experience. Each bite of the Banana con Dulce de Leche bursts with incredible nuances of banana that leave your taste buds in pure curiosity and a desire for more. Casiano describes its foundational layer – a buttery sable cookie with golden edges and a tender center – as a harmonious prelude. “Picture a nest woven by caramelized dreams and creamy whispers. Here, dulce de leche meets white chocolate in a clandestine affair. The ganache cradles secrets—the warmth of slow-cooked milk, the silkiness of cocoa butter.”
This nest, Casiano explains, is beyond what meets the eye and one that holds memories. “Within the nest lies a banana cremeux. It’s not just banana; it’s nostalgia, sunshine, and the embrace of family. The cremeux is a custard, a love letter to ripe bananas. Its flavor blooms—a sweet crescendo against the dulce de leche’s depth. A tuile—a whisper-thin lace—rests atop this creation. Its crispness contrasts the softness below.”
While Luciana Eatery & Bar also has three other unique sweets on its menu, Casiano says the Banana con Dulce de Leche stands out as a star among stars. He explains that the natural sweetness of the bananas combines well with the deep caramel notes of dulce de leche – proving to be a perfect match. The juxtaposition between creaminess and crunch, richness and lightness come together as a symphony of contrast and compatibility. In addition to flavor, Casiano reveals that it can be made gluten-free, making it a rare find in the pastry world.
Banana con Dulce de Leche is certainly a fan favorite. For many, this childhood treat – made by Grandma after-school for a job well done – makes every bite that much more special. “The combination evokes warmth, safety, and the simple joys of life. When you take that first bite, you’re not just tasting flavors; you’re savoring nostalgia,” he says.
Casiano suggests pairing this nostalgic dessert with a La Loteria (Tiki). The fruity tropical escape in a glass – as he describes it – is a mix of Espolon Blanco Tequila, Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum, Campari, citrus, and a hint of cinnamon. Cafe con Leche – Lucina’s “espresso martini” – is another great pairing he recommends. “The tequila and coffee’s boldness contrasts the dessert’s sweetness. It’s like a gentle wake-up call for your taste buds.”
Food has a way of transcending time and place. It can be a memory that lasts a lifetime. At Lucina Eatery & Bar, every dining experience is believed to be a journey of flavor. “From the first bite to the last, we infuse our dishes with intention and love,” says Casiano. “Whether it’s a savory creation or a sweet indulgence, our care ensures that your culinary adventure is nothing short of delicious.”
