Ranch along the River

To satisfy his love of family and fly-fishing, Bill Coburn imagined a home on a parcel of old ranchland along the Gunnison River. “He wanted a fishing nest,” says his wife, Annie. She saw an old gravel pit on the property and wasn’t so sure.

Now, Bill, founder and president of Coburn Development, and Annie, a designer, delight in the vintage ranch retreat they built in 2006, a half-hour drive from their Crested Butte home.

The Coburns’ Gunnison River home looks the part it plays—cozy winter getaway and airy summer fishing cottage for the couple, their family and friends. From its modest size of about 1,900 square feet to the casual furnishings inside, the home’s design reflects what the group comes here for: days filled with rafting, hiking, mountain biking and, of course, fishing; and evenings huddled around the indoor/outdoor fireplace or bonfire pit by the river.
