Rustic & Refined

A young couple turns a bland, builder-grade master bath into a mountain-modern sanctuary

David Patterson

When the shower pan began leaking into the kitchen below, the owners of this Castle Pines home knew it was time to remodel their bland, builder-grade master bathroom. The young couple asked designer Jodi Cook, of Ashley Campbell Interior Design, for clean lines, loads of texture, earthy rustic touches and a little bit of quirk. “They wanted a retreat, but it had to be functional,” Cook says. “Two parts hard-working bath and one part sanctuary. We didn’t want the aesthetics to overtake function.”

Cook kept the basic footprint but wisely removed a space-grabbing tub deck, leaving room for an expanded shower and a freestanding tub. A double vanity boasts clean lines and a soft gray finish that reiterates the soothing neutral palette. The focal point of the room—a stacked stone backsplash—is highlighted by ceiling-hung mirrors and vintage-inspired light fixtures. Crisp white quartz countertops balance the heavy textures and add a little shine. Cook furnished an underused space between the bedroom and bathroom with built-in towel storage, laundry hampers, a mini fridge and coffee maker. A barn door with an artfully weathered look adds an unexpected rustic touch. “Everything looks lovely but nothing is so precious that the homeowners have to worry about messing up the bathroom,” says Cook.

Jodi’s Tips

  • Age new wood with an easy DIY trick: let steel wool oxidize in vinegar and brush on the resulting colored solution. “We went all over town looking for the right glaze for the barn door and this worked better,” Jodi says.
  • Small pieces of furniture—a vanity stool, table or chair—add character and make a utilitarian space feel homey. It’s also a chance to introduce new materials.
  • Hide practical elements—conceal heating under floor tiles or position electrical outlets inside the cabinetry.
