Insider Secrets for a Successful Home Remodel

From nightmare experiences with contractors to results that are below expectation, there are plenty of stories about home remodel projects gone awry. The good news is the design teams at Vaught Frye Larson Architects and Tremmel Design Group, LLC have a few key insider tips to ensure smooth sailing ahead.

Tip #1: Select a top-notch team.

Your design team is everything—especially when it comes to home remodeling. Ask friends and family for reputable recommendations of architects, developers and other companies they’ve used in the past, and then interview all potential candidates. According to Tremmel Design Group, your team should be able to take your vision and create something better than expected.

Tip #2: Celebrate your stairs.

It might seem like an unlikely focal point, but the team at Vaught Frye Larson Architects says the stairs can say a lot about your home. “Whether going upstairs or down to the basement, the stairs are a key place to change the feel and increase connection in the home.”

Tip #3: Pay attention to time.

Time and money are both hot commodities in the remodeling game; make sure both are being maximized. Hold your team to the set deadlines, but prepare yourself for the potential that unforeseen issues could create a lengthier timeline than expected.

Tip #4: Create an efficient layout.

Tremmel Design Group says clients often think more square footage is the answer to their space needs, but that’s not necessarily the case. It might just be a matter of reconfiguring the existing space in a more efficient way.

Tip #5 Remain open to tradeoffs.

Know your budget and encourage your team to offer alternatives when something will set you over the edge. “The constraint of staying on budget and solving the unexpected is where the magic of design is most often found,” says Vaught Frye Larson Architects.

Tip #6: Integrate the outside.

Who doesn’t love the look and feel of more space? Integrate the indoors with the out by adding more windows, allowing for natural light and emphasizing patio spaces as much as possible. This will make the inside appear larger even if the square footage says otherwise.

Stick to these tips and you’ll be celebrating – instead of lamenting – your next home remodel.
