A Magical Home on Beaver Pond

A dated home transforms into a mountain modern paradise, reflecting the beauty of its Gore Creek site

Photos by Ron Ruscio

Situated at the edge of the pond in Vail's coveted Beaver Dam neighborhood, this warm and inviting home quite literally reflects the magic of its site.

Before its multi-phase renovation, the home on this lot was a flat-roofed contemporary house with plastic windows. After a collaborative effort between the architect and the homeowners—who are the interior designer/builder team behind Gregg & Co.—the home was transformed into a majestic 4,000-square-foot, mountain-modern paradise.

A dramatic, curved wall greets friends and family upon entry, which is just on the other side of this grand, stone fireplace—built in part from the existing home’s exterior.

The fireplace also boasts transparent features allowing the owners and guests to see straight through it into the great room. Reclaimed antique European beams from Arrigoni Woods echo the home’s rustic surroundings, while a clean-lined steel band around the fireplace weaves in a mention of sleek, modern style.

Large glass doors extend the living room into the outdoor space, honoring the water and surrounding pines, and inviting spectacular views into the home’s interiors.

The kitchen, designed by Mikal Otten of EKD, was dubbed a global-winning design in the 2013-2014 Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Kitchen Design Contest. The relaxed and airy space further accentuates the inspiration of nature, with layers of distinctive modern finishes, like the steel hood and marble slab. The door on the right is the refrigerator, and the door on the left leads to a pantry, a small catering kitchen, and a wine room.

Reclaimed-wood sliding barn doors and a steel fireplace create a warm, modern backdrop for the home’s dining space.

Behind the dining table sits a buffet with steel shelf wood cabinets, also designed by Otten, and built-in to serve. A sheet of glass separates this buffet from the wine room, and a gorgeous wall of onyx is backlit behind the wine display.
