A Tuscan Night for a Worthy Cause

An event to support The Glory Community, giving adults with developmental disabilities a beautiful home to call their own

Rendering by KGA Studio Architects

In Colorado, 12,000 individuals with developmental disabilities are living with parents or caregivers who are over the age of 60. If and when these adults outlive their parents, they will have few housing options to choose from. Many will end up entering the foster care system, with a turnover rate between 12 and 18 months—not an ideal way to provide stability and comfort.

The Glory Community is giving adults with developmental disabilities a beautiful home and an independent lifestyle, for life. A total of five lovely homes will create a “neighborhood of friends” in a private cul-de-sac in a Broomfield, Colorado—two homes for men, two homes for women, and a fifth that will serves as a “retirement” home, allowing residents to remain in the Community throughout their lives.

Each home will be unique in its architectural style, house eight adults, and have live-in “house parents” to provide the extra level of guidance necessary to navigate life. Residents will be encouraged to work part-time and volunteer in the community as often as possible, as well as participate in the full array of activities designed to help them grow socially, physically and spiritually.

One home has been completed so far, and it received the Judges' Special Award of Excellence by the National Sales and Marketing Council in 2012. Colorado home design professionals involved include the current home's architect, Jerry Gloss of KGA Studio Architects, builder Sopris Homes, and interior designers Insite Design Group and Saddleback Design.
